Creating Animated GIFs

animated .GIF file showing cigarette being put out and text saying 'Thanks for Not Smoking' This animation was created from seven cells, (each cell is a separate .GIF file).

The cells were created using a PC based paint program and saved in the .GIF file format.

Alchemy Mindworks GIF Construction Set and it's Animation Wizard was used to build the animation with the following controls:

  • 16 color pallette

  • "remove to background", (with background color set to #13, or Bright Magenta in the 16 color default PC pallette). Note: One color in the available 256 color pallette must be specified as the 'background color' to utilize the transparent .GIF mode which causes properly designed images to appear to 'float' on the background. Any pixel which contains this color will not be displayed.

  • Controls for timing were placed as 60/100ths for first cell, and 20/100th of a second for each of the following cells.

  • A LOOP control was added to keep the animation running indefinitely.

The image can be used multiple times on the same page and will only be pulled from the server once if cache is working.

The entire animation is saved as a 2894 byte .GIF file.

Here's another little .GIF animation created in the same manner.
